In 2018, he wrote one of the two prefaces of Serge Elhaïk's book "Les Arrangeurs de la Chanson Française".

Best known as the composer of "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien", which became a hit song for Edith Piaf. He also wrote for stars such as Jacques Brel, Juliette Gréco and Barbra Streisand.

In the 1970s, Charles Dumont started a career as interpreter with songs such as Une chanson (1976) and Les amours impossibles (1978), which received awards.

Dumont tells in the book Édith Piaf, Opinions publiques, by Bernard Marchois (TF1 Editions 1995), that Michel Vaucaire's original title was "Non, je ne trouverai rien" (No, I will not find anything) and that the song was meant for the popular French singer Rosalie Dubois. However, thinking of Édith, he changed the title to "Non, je ne regrette rien" (No, I Regret Nothing).

In 2019, he gave the recital "La Tour Eiffel en musique - Chantez!", at the Gustave Eiffel lounge of the Eiffel Tower. This was on the occasion of the release of his latest album L'Âme soeur, accompanied by the musician and arranger Frédéric Andrews. It was his last performance on a stage.

He and Michel Vaucaire wrote a song about the Berlin Wall, which had just gone up, called Le mur, intended for Piaf. After she died, they heard Barbra Streisand wanted it for an album of French-based songs, and the story is they refused to let any French performers sing it until after Streisand's decision and performance. In 1966 Barbra Streisand released her 8th album, Je m'appelle Barbra, with Le mur on it, sung all in French.

The 28th and 29the March 2004, he celebrated his fifty-year career at the Bataclan in Paris.

Piaf's death in 1963 led him to work with Jacques Brel, writing Je m'en remets à toi in 1964, and to writing songs for television shows such as Michel Vaillant in 1967, and cinema, Trafic by Jacques Tati in 1971.

In 2010, he took part in the 'Âge tendre et têtes de bois 8 tour' (fifth season), alongside Michèle Torr, Sheila, Hervé Vilard, Georgette Lemaire and Alain Turban .

Dumont wrote songs until the 1960s, sometimes under an alias, for Dalida, Gloria Lasso, Luis Mariano and Tino Rossi. He often worked with lyricist Michel Vaucaire.

He was awarded the Charles-Cros Academy Prize in 1973 for his album "Une femme",knighted in 1984 and awarded "Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters" in 2011.

Dumont is best remembered for writing or co-writing over 30 of the most well-known songs recorded by singer Édith Piaf, including "Non, je ne regrette rien", "Mon Dieu", "Flonflons du Bal", and "Les Amants" which Piaf and Dumont wrote and sang together in 1962.

The Académie française awarded him the Henry-Jousselin Prize in 1987 for his "collection of songs".

In 2018, he worked with the Besançon Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Pascal Vuillemin to prepare two concerts at the Grand Kursaal in Besançon on 22 and 23 December.
