- On Wednesday, September 7, 1977, Dollarhide was filming The Oregon Trail (1976) near Flagstaff, AZ. He was employed as a team driver when he was thrown from his horse, which then stepped on his chest. He was treated and released that day at Flagstaff Community Hospital and continued working. He was later found dead in his motel room.
- According to the Arizona Daily Sun of Flagstaff, AZ, Tuesday, September 13, 1977, an autopsy was performed on Dollarhide and it was found that despite the accident with the horse, he officially died of natural causes, specifically, cirrhosis of the liver.
