- His son, Willard Whitney Straight Dolivet, drowned on September 7, 1952, in a pond at the home of his mother. Dolivet had had to leave America a few years earlier because of alleged Communist sympathies, and was not permitted to return to the country for his son's funeral.
- He was an ardent anti-Nazi during the 1930s and spoke at an anti-Nazi rally held in Paris in 1937. Subsequently, he joined the French air force and, after the fall of France, escaped to America with the help of the American consul in Marseilles. He worked for the Free French throughout the war.
