John Dillinger

Trivia

John Dillinger

  • Chicago's Biograph cinema closed its doors for the final time on July 13th, 1974. Some forty years to the day of his death (22nd July, 1934) outside its doors.
  • True Crime author Jay Robert Nash has always insisted that the FBI mistakenly killed a smalltime hoodlum named Jimmy Lawrence, and that the real John Dillinger remained at large.
  • Exactly 26 days before Dillinger was gunned down by the FBI, he actually died on an operating table while under anesthetic. Doctors quickly revived him, however.
  • Insisted that all the members of his gang address him by his first name.
  • Was once a professional baseball player.
  • Some sources say 22 June 1903 as date of birth
  • Dillinger was informally named America's first Public Enemy Number One in a speech given by U.S. Attorney General Homer S. Cummings on June 22nd, 1934.
  • Although John's last name is pronounced "Dillin-grrr" by the press and public (like the "derringer" pistol), his last name is actually pronounced "Dil-linger" with a hard "G" sound as the family has a German heritage.
  • John Dillinger was due to meet up with Baby Face Nelson and Homer Van Meter on July 23rd, 1934 - the day after he was killed. They were supposed to meet with Chicago fixer Jimmy Murray to go over the details of a proposed million dollar train robbery. Murray had previously masterminded the train robbery at Roundout, Illinois committed by The Newton Brothers (as seen in the film "The Newton Boys"). However, once Dillinger was killed, the train robbery was abandoned.
  • Deserted from the U.S. Navy.
  • He was Scottish and German ancestry.
