The youngest of four, she grew up in Leeds and left school with 8 O levels and 2 A levels, then attended drama school. She spent fifteen years with her partner Ron Bertoli, until the end of 1995. She now lives in South London with her son. She quit Eastenders when the writers planned for her character to be gang-raped, saying that it would be too traumatic for her son to see.
