Although most often called upon to play the villain (due to his dark good looks and sinister beard), he also had a career as a voice actor on BBC Radio appearing on such programs as the "Morning Story". He was a notable 'The Master' in many series of Doctor Who (1963).

- He became a very good friend to both Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning during his time on Doctor Who (1963). Both were devastated on hearing about his death near Nevsehir in Turkey.
- He was the first actor to play the Master, the Doctor's greatest individual enemy, in Doctor Who (1963). He played the role from Terror of the Autons: Episode One (1971) to Frontier in Space: Episode Six (1973). He was succeeded in the role by Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beevers, Anthony Ainley, Gordon Tipple, Eric Roberts, Derek Jacobi, John Simm, Michelle Gomez and Sacha Dhawan.
