- Desmond Dekker was born on July 16, 1941 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a composer and actor, known for Fool's Gold (2008), Idiocracy (2006) and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008). He died on May 24, 2006 in Thornton Heath, London, England, UK.

- Dekker spent his formative years in Kingston. From a young age he regularly attended the local church with his grandmother and aunt. This early religious upbringing, as well as Dekker's enjoyment of singing hymns, led to a lifelong religious commitment.
- In 1961 he auditioned for Coxsone Dodd (Studio One) and Duke Reid (Treasure Isle), though neither audition was successful.
- In 1969 Dekker took permanent residency in the UK.
