Biography

Giuseppe De Santis was born on February 11, 1917 in Fondi, Lazio, Italy. He was a writer and director, known for Tragic Hunt (1947), Giorni d'amore (1954) and The Year Long Road (1958). He was married to Gordana Miletic. He died on May 16, 1997 in Rome, Lazio, Italy.

Studied literature, philosophy and cinema during the 1930's. Began to work as a film critic during the early war years. Assisted Luchino Visconti on 'Ossessione' in 1942. After five years as assistant director and screenwriter, made his name as director of films like 'Caccia Tragica' (Tragic Pursuit) and 'Riso Amaro' (Bitter Rice) which examined the socio/economic plight of ordinary people in post-war Italy.
