Biography

Cartola was born on October 11, 1908 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was an actor and composer, known for Central Station (1998), City of God (2002) and Rio, I Love You (2014). He was married to Dona Zica. He died on November 30, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Best known as Cartola, one of the most beloved composers of Brazilian Popular Music. His songs "As rosas não falam", "Tive Sim", "Quem me vê sorrindo", among others, are known all over the country.

His name means "top hat" in Portuguese.

His first name "Angenor" is a mistake (it was intended "Agenor") recorded in the birth register.
