Biography

Azucena de la Fuente, known for her magnetic gaze, is a Spanish actress, writer, director and producer with an international career spanning film, television, theatre and radio. She has worked in Spanish, English and French and has collaborated with international actors including Andy García, Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, Olivier Martinez, Mira Sorvino and Elsa Pataky.

She studied acting in New York with renowned acting teacher Uta Hagen and later worked professionally in Los Angeles. Her international training was supported by scholarships from the European Community, the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Fulbright Program (U.S. - Spain). In 1987, she received a European Community scholarship for young workers to study acting with Wet Paint Arts in Dublin, Ireland.

Her film work includes collaborations with acclaimed Spanish directors Carlos Saura, with whom she appeared as a young Josefina Bayeu in Goya en Burdeos, and Vicente Aranda, with whom she appeared as Olga in Libertarias. Her other film credits include The Disappearance of García Lorca (Muerte en Granada), Angel of Death (Semana Santa) and Cobayas: Human Test.

She was one of six presenters of El día del milenio, TVE's contribution to the BBC-led international television special 2000 Today, marking the arrival of the new millennium in a live broadcast spanning approximately 25 hours.

She co wrote, directed, produced and starred in the short film A Woman’s Daydream (Sueño de una mujer despierta), which became Oscar-qualifying in 2003 following its theatrical exhibition in Los Angeles. The film was also presented at international festivals in the United States and Europe, including the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.

Her work has received international recognition at film festivals and awards events across Europe, the United Kingdom, Morocco and the United States. Her work has also been presented through Instituto Cervantes cultural programmes in Manchester, Turin and Beijing.

Her work in radio includes acting, presenting and film criticism for Radio Nacional de España and Telemadrid Radio. At Radio Nacional R-1, she hosted and developed her own segment, Relatos Eróticos, selecting and reading the winning entries and choosing the music for each broadcast. The segment later evolved into a poetry feature, and she also starred in the radio serial La Malaya.

As a performer and creator, she wrote, directed, produced and performed a one-woman show featuring 22 characters in three languages, combining acting, comedy, singing and poetry with original filmed sequences and projections of her own artwork. The production was presented in Valladolid and other Spanish venues.

De la Fuente is drawn to character-driven work and international creative collaborations, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to her work as an actress and filmmaker.
