- Étienne de Jouy was born on October 19, 1764 in Versailles, Île-de-France, Kingdom of France [now Yvelines, France]. He was a writer, known for Match Point (2005), Guillaume Tell: Royal Opera, London 2015 (2015) and Guillaume Tell (2013). He died on September 4, 1846 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Seine-et-Oise [now Yvelines], France.

- At the age 17 he travelled to French Guiana as a sub-lieutenant, and later served in India for three years as an artillery officer. Returned to France in 1790 during the French Revolution, which he fought in during the early years, but eventually retired to pursue a career in literature.
