Biography

In 1991 John shot his first feature as cinematographer, Murder Blues. He went on to build a reputation through his work on films such as Small Faces (1996), which won the Edinburgh Film Festival Best British Movie award, The Full Monty (1997) and Hideous Kinky (1998) for which he was recognised with an award for Best Technical/Artistic Achievement at the Evening Standard British Film Awards. A Best Cinematography nomination at the 2001 Independent Spirit Awards followed for Hamlet (2000). Further films on which John was Director of Photography include Serendipity (2001) starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, Weinstein's Ella Enchanted (2004), Shall We Dance (2004) with Richard Gere, Jenifer Lopez and Susan Sarandon, and A Lot Like Love (2005) which starred Ashton Kutcher. In 2007 John was nominated for a Best Photography & Lighting BAFTA for his work on Tsunami: The Aftermath. In 2009 John won the World Cinema Cinematography Award at Sundance for his work on An Education, for which he was also nominated for the BSC Best Cinematography Award. The film itself won the Spirit Best Foreign Movie Award and Sundance Audience Award . Most recently he has worked on Made in Dagenham (2010), Quartet (2012) with Dustin Hoffman directing and Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) shot in Nigeria .If I Stay (2014) ,Coalition (2015) TV Political Drama that won the RTS award for best Drama . Indian Summer (2015) TV series shot in Malaysia .(2016) Will (TV Mini series ) Directed by Shekhar Kapur . (2017) Slaughterhouse Rulez Directed by Crispian Mills starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost . Shot TV series 'World on Fire' 2019 episode1.3 with Director Thomas Napper. 2019 shot 'Pixie' in Ireland starring Alec Baldwin and directed by Barnaby Thompson.

John was President of the British Society of Cinematographers from 2010 till 2014 . In 2013 he received the Royal Society of Photography 'Lumiere Award' for his contribution to British cinema.
