Brendan Davis
Brendan Davis is an American writer-director-producer based outside Paris and the founder of Malkuth Film. Over a 35-year career in film and television, he has worked across the United States, China, New Zealand and Europe, developing expertise in international and cross-border production. After a decade based in Beijing and years producing projects around the world, he is increasingly focused on writing and directing his own material. He lives and works in France under a CNC Talent Passport. His films have premiered, competed and won at festivals including Toronto, Berlin and Sundance Hong Kong.

Davis currently has two feature films in active development as writer-director. The Unwinding expands his acclaimed 25-minute short of the same name, starring Kevin Michael West as a 72-year-old British widower in Newcastle whose friendship with a young delivery driver gradually reveals a deeper story about grief, memory and the ways people construct meaning after loss. The short has generated more than 1.2 million organic YouTube views, holds a 7.6 IMDb rating, has been subtitled in more than fifty languages and received multiple festival honors. The feature screenplay is complete and budgeted at approximately £1.1 million for production in Newcastle and North East England. Davis is currently seeking the right UK producing partner to pursue BFI National Lottery Discovery Round 3 and bring the film into production.

His second feature as writer-director, One Shot, is a contemporary Franco-British drama set primarily in Paris. A struggling British writer and his French wife agree to help close friends conceive a child the old-fashioned way, an intimate act of generosity that eventually draws them into a paid arrangement with a wealthy English widow and a public scandal neither couple anticipated. Primarily English-language with organic French dialogue, the film is conceived as a performance-driven adult drama in the vein of Anora, Marriage Story and Aftersun. The screenplay is complete, with an approximately EUR4 million budget and a France-led co-production structure spanning Paris, London and the Thames Valley.

As a producer, Davis has worked on films including Metamorphosis, Deadgirl, Born to Dance and Life With Fiona, with projects premiering, competing or winning at festivals including Toronto, Berlin and Sundance Hong Kong. During his decade in Beijing, he produced film, television and documentary work throughout China and internationally. He is currently producing My Favorite Season, a Paris-set feature set within the world of high fashion, and developing The Bishop’s Man, adapted from Lynden MacIntyre’s bestselling novel, with Babak Payami attached to direct in Nova Scotia.

Davis is also a musician and composer who writes and records original music. He wrote, directed and scored the short Dirt Track Honeymoon, a distinctly American tonal counterpoint to The Unwinding and part of a body of work reflecting his multidisciplinary approach to filmmaking.
