Julie Dash

Julie Dash transformed American cinema with Daughters of the Dust, becoming in 1992 the first African American woman to achieve a wide theatrical release for a feature film. Widely recognized as one of the most culturally consequential films of its year, the work redefined how Black women’s lives, histories, and visual storytelling could inhabit the screen. Its legacy has only deepened: in 2014 the film was selected for the National Film Registry, and by 2020 Sight & Sound and the British Film Institute ranked Daughters of the Dust among the 100 Greatest Films of All Time, affirming its lasting global influence.

Julie Dash is widely recognized for her visual explorations of racial justice, diasporic identity, migration, and the lives of Black women across film, video, theme park pavilion design for Disney’s Imagineering, and museum and gallery installations. Her work has been presented at leading cultural institutions, including MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Indiana Museum of Art, and the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. In recognition of her enduring cultural impact and her commitment to preserving and illuminating Gullah Geechee history and culture, Dash received the President Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.
