- J.C. Daniel was born in 1893 in Kerala, India. He was a writer and director, known for Vigathakumaran (1930). He died in 1975.
- Is considered the father of Malayalam films due to his efforts in bringing the film medium to Kerala.
- After completing his studies, he went to Chennai and learned filmmaking. Upon returning to Kerala, he started the 'The Travancore Pictures' studio in 1926.
- Produced, directed and starred in the first Malayalam movie, the silent film Vigathakumaran (1930), which focused on the traditional martial arts of Kerala.
- The Kerala State government instituted their highest film honor as the 'J.C. Daniel Award', which carries a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.
