Kat Coiro is a Gracie Award and DGA-nominated director, writer, and executive producer known for her work across film and television.
She directed the Universal Pictures romantic comedy Marry Me (2022), starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Maluma. The film opened simultaneously at No. 1 in theaters and on streaming and marked Coiro's studio feature debut. Most recently, she directed You, Me & Tuscany (2026) for Universal Pictures, starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page.
Coiro began her career writing, directing, and producing independent films among them And While We Were Here (2012), shot in Italy in 11 days for $150K while eight months pregnant, which premiered in competition at Tribeca, and L!fe Happens (2011) starring Krysten Ritter, Kate Bosworth, and Rachel Bilson, which won the Cinequest Film Festival Ensemble Award and was acquired by Universal.
On television, Coiro has become one of the industry's most sought-after directors. She directed and executive produced Marvel's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022), directing six episodes of the series including the pilot, and served as executive producer throughout its run. She directed and executive produced the pilot of CBS's Matlock (2024), starring Kathy Bates, and has continued to direct multiple episodes of the series which garnered her The Gracie Award in 2025 for Director-Drama. Additional pilot credits include Tina Fey's Girls5eva (2021), on which she also served as co-executive producer, Florida Girls (2019), and The Spiderwick Chronicles (2024), for which she directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Her work on The Spiderwick Chronicles (2024) earned a DGA Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children's Programs.
Coiro directed episodes of acclaimed series including Dead to Me (2019), Shameless (2018), Modern Family (2018), Mozart in the Jungle (2018), and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2017).
Born in New York and raised in Miami, Coiro attended Interlochen Arts Academy before studying theater and film at Carnegie Mellon University and directing at the Moscow Art Theatre. She was also a fellow in the American Film Institute's directing program. Early in her career, she appeared as an actress in television series including Charmed, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
In addition to her filmmaking work, Coiro is an avid advocate for sustainability in the entertainment industry through her initiative #LightsCameraPlastic. Kat serves as a DGA mentor for emerging female directors. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, actor Rhys Coiro, and their three children.
