He was born in Nottingham to a mother who was one of the first women stage directors in Britain and a father who was a revue actor. He later moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music, then went to drama school, during which time he appeared in many school broadcasts for the BBC. After winning the Drama Cup, he joined the Regents Park Open Air Theatre where he spent three seasons. He was also doing a great deal of broadcasting. Being on the radio show 'Accent on Youth' led him into revue. The writers Peter Myers and Alec Grahame gave him a chance in their Theatre Club Revues when he replaced Michael Medwin. Following this he did 'High Spirts' at the London Hippodrome and ,subsequently, six seasons of Fol-de-Rols. While doing the show in Edinburgh, he was spotted by George Innes who booked him for BBC television's 'High Summer'. He had four daughters, including twins.

He suffered severe head injuries in a car crash on the M5 motorway on 3 October 1992. He was not expected to survive but made a miraculous recovery.
He had five children: Liz and Lindsay (twins, born 1954), Caroline (born 1958), Charlotte (born 1962) and Nicholas (born 1965).
He lived in an apartment in the St John's Wood district of London. It was opposite Lords Cricket Ground where he, a great fan, could watch all games played. When a new stand was built obscuring his sight of the pitch he simply purchased the penthouse flat in the same block thereby restoring his fine - and free view.
Father-in-law of Phil Lynott.
He was awarded CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1993 Queen's New Year Honours List for charitable services.
