- A matinee idol of the French silent cinema. He is best known for playing the title role in the crime serials Judex (1916) and The New Mission of Judex (1917). This darkly mysterious character is considered a prototype of the modern superhero.
- Died five days before his 41st birthday. His premature death has been attributed to either tuberculosis or heart disease.
