Biography

Jonny was born the middle child of a seamstress and a professional footballer. His earliest performances were in school productions including a celebrated double bill of Oscar Wilde's "The Ballad Of Reading Gaol" and Ovid's "Chariot Of The Sun" in which he played respectively the Judge and Phaeton. The production and Jonny in particular won rave reviews in the national press (unusual for a lowly school production) but Jonny got the bug and his mentor - the director of the productions and himself a renowned writer and intellectual - Robert Tanitch, encouraged him to audition for Theatre schools. Jonny won a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where he was awarded the Hannam Clarke award on graduation. He chose to work in the theatre which is his first love and to which he frequently returns between film and television work. After working for many years in theatre, TV and film in the UK and with the imminent screening of his most recent films "Sharpe's Peril" in India with Sean Bean and "Nutcracker- the Untold Story", which was directed by the legendary Andrei Konchalovsky, and co starred Nathan Lane and John Turturro, Jonny moved to Los Angeles in late 2009. Within a year he landed one of the most coveted parts on TV, that of Chief Warden Edwin James in JJ Abrams' "Alcatraz". Jonny now lives between Los Angeles and his much loved Victorian home in North London.

With more than three decades bringing compelling characters to life on screen, award-winning English actor Jonny Coyne has built a career across prestige television dramas, major studio features, and globally recognized franchises. Coyne can next be seen appearing as an Imperial Warlord in Lucasfilm and Disney’s highly anticipated feature The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau and slated for a global theatrical release on May 22, 2026. Reprising his role from the original Disney+ series that launched the franchise phenomenon, Coyne returns to the Star Wars universe as an Imperial Warlord within the Shadow Council - a secretive faction of Imperial remnants plotting against the New Republic.

Coyne previously co-starred in Netflix’s Oscar-nominated Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom opposite Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, with the ensemble earning Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, and NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Ensemble Cast, taking home the latter. His additional film credits include Apple Original Films’ The Family Plan opposite Mark Wahlberg, Legendary’s remake of The Toxic Avenger directed by Macon Blair, Brad Anderson’s political thriller Beirut alongside Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike, Dan Gilroy’s Oscar-nominated Nightcrawler, Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad opposite Sean Penn, and Todd Phillips’ The Hangover Part III, where he appeared alongside the Wolfpack and John Goodman as "Hector."

On television, Coyne has recurred on Disney+’s The Mandalorian and Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, and appeared in a season-long arc on NBC’s The Blacklist opposite James Spader. He was also a series regular on J.J. Abrams’ FOX series Alcatraz, and has recurred on AMC’s Preacher as the iconic "Allfather," as well as on CBS’ Mom and AMC’s Turn.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where he received the Hannam Clarke Award upon graduation, Coyne has built a career marked by intelligence, gravitas, and a commanding presence on screen. Known for portraying complex figures of authority and quiet menace, he brings a distinctive edge to both prestige dramas and large-scale commercial storytelling. Coyne currently splits his time between London and Los Angeles.
