Joan Cooper was born on August 10, 1922 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, UK. She was an actress, known for Ben Travers' Farces (1970), Dad's Army (1968) and The Ruling Class (1972). She was married to Arthur Lowe and Richard Gatehouse. She died on July 1, 1989 in Hayfield, Derbyshire, England, UK.

One son, Stephen Lowe (born in January 1953), with Arthur Lowe.

The majority of her film and television roles were small parts in works which featured her husband, Arthur Lowe. In his later years, he would often insist on a part being found for his wife in his various projects and would often turn work down if producers refused to comply with this request.

Like her husband, Arthur Lowe, she was an alcoholic.

Two children with Richard Gatehouse: David (born in 1941) and Jane (died in infancy).
