  • Antoon Coolen was born on April 17, 1897 in Wijlre, Limburg, Netherlands. He was a writer, known for Village by the River (1958), De herberg in het misverstand (1976) and Stijn Streuvels 95 jaar! (1966). He was married to Gerda de Jong. He died on November 9, 1961 in Waalre, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.

Trivia

  • A memorial for Coolen, made by sculptor Fons Bemelmans in 1997, was placed near his birth-place in Wijlre.
  • Fell out of a train, three weeks before his death. He lay for 4 hours unconscious next to the railway track. The real cause of the incident was never discovered. Some people thought he was pushed out of the train, because he was about to reveal facts on misbehaviour of car manufacturer DAF in World War II. Coolen never fully recovered.
  • He wrote the Boekenweekgeschenk for the Boekenweek of 1947 and a novel that was part of the Boekenweekgeschenk in 1939.
