Biography

Janet Collins was born on March 7, 1917 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. She was an actress, known for Flamingo (1942), Carmen (1952) and The Admiral Broadway Revue (1949). She died on May 28, 2003 in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Was the prima ballerina of the Metropolitan Opera House in the early 1950s and one of a very few black women to become prominent in American classical ballet during the turbulent decades that preceded and followed the American civil rights movement.

She was the first black prima ballerina to appear at the Metropolitan Opera House.
