Biography

  • LA Coles Fine Art Films/ 2053152 Ontario Inc. is a boutique production company under the stewardship of filmmaker, Leslie Ann Coles. When working with scripted material, she understands actors' artistic processes intuitively, having trained and worked as a professional actor. She gravitates to realism and nuanced characters and enjoys stories with compelling, character-driven dialogue and action. In the documentary landscape, she excels at conducting and directing interviews. A key strength is her ability to creatively strategize projects and determine their potential with collaborators during the development and pre-production process, always with a critical understanding of a film's milieu, be it social, cultural, or art-focused.

Coles was invited to join the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) and the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) under the documentary initiative. Her multi-award-winning feature documentary "Melody Makers" - and companion interactive digital media/app - was released in 2019 with the support of Telefilm Canada. Coles is currently in production with her short film "The Curtain," that she wrote, produced and is directing, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and ACTRA TIP (Toronto Indie Production). Her female-driven western "Soiled Dove," received script development from Telefilm Canada in 2021 and has garnered 11 finalist international screenwriting awards and ranks in the top 2% of more than 50,000 screenplays on Coverfly. She hopes to steer "Soiled Dove" into production in 2022-2023.

  • Founder and President of the Female Eye Festival, in Toronto, Canada.

Quotes

  • The lack of gender equity in film making [and in other arts] is perhaps a self-sustaining cycle. Movies shape the way that people see the world and by extension, the way that people see women.
