Biography

Tony Coleman

Mini bio

  • Tony Coleman's career really began when he bought a super 8 movie camera and began making short stop-motion animated sci-fi films for fun and for school projects. After high school he was accepted into the Radio and Television program at Ryerson in Toronto where he won three awards and a bursary for his student productions. He particularly enjoyed film and video editing. After Ryerson, Tony played bass guitar professionally for a few years, until some band mates who had signed a record deal needed to make a music video. They asked him for help and he directed it. Slow Train by The Breit Bros found it's way onto MuchMusic and the place where he edited the video offered him a junior editor position. Quickly discovering the creative satisfaction he got from editing, not to mention the pay check, he set his focus on becoming a good picture editor. After cutting a bunch of corporate videos and broadcast sports programs, Tony got a gig finishing a low budget science fiction feature film (Strange Horizons). As well as editing the film, he created a bunch of visual effects for it too. That work led to three more feature film editing gigs (Carver's Gate, 2103: Deadly Wake, Falling Fire). In 1997 Tony began working at the CBC for the television series Undercurrents. His first season on the show was nominated for multiple awards and the series won a Gemini Award as the best investigative series. After three seasons he moved on to edit long form documentaries for the CBC Network Documentary Unit. He received multiple Gemini nominations for both his editing and visual effects work. In 2010, Tony released his first feature film documentary, created with his partner Margaret Meagher and their company Tiny Goat Films. Mighty Uke: The Amazing Comeback of a Musical Underdog became an international hit, which led to The Mighty Uke Roadshow, a new kind of music making/film experience that toured all over Europe and North America. In 2013 Tony began editing episodes of CBC Nature of Things for a variety of independent producers. In 2018 Tony and Margaret released their second feature documentary Miniature, broadcast on CBC Doc, Superchannel, NHK and a host of European broadcasters.
