- Coates was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Santa Monica, Calif., where she acted in children's theater. She went on to major in acting at the University of California, Los Angeles, and worked in stock companies in the East. She met her future husband, James Noble - who played "Governor Gene Gatling" on the TV show Benson (1979) - in 1951 in Worcester, Mass., while playing "Eliza Doolittle" in "Pygmalion". The couple appeared in many plays together, notably "Long Day's Journey into Night" and "A Delicate Balance".

- Seeing many of her friends die of AIDS, she became a longtime supporter and activist for the AIDS Project in Los Angeles as well as the Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York. In 1986 she took a nine-year sabbatical from performing in order to volunteer in hospitals and on hot-lines.
- She and husband James Noble met during the run of the play "Pygmalion" in 1951. They performed frequently on the 60s stage in such productions as "Long Day's Journey Into Night", "The Night of the Iguana", "The Three Sisters", "A Delicate Balance" and "A Scent of Flowers".
