James Clyne
- Art Department
- Visual Effects
- Production Designer
James Clyne has worked in the film industry for 20+ years.
James studied fine art at UC Santa Barbara where he focused on oil painting and photography. He was inspired by master painters and the power of light through a lens. He went on to study at the Art Center College of Design where he learned automotive, industrial and film production design, graduating with Honors with a BS in Industrial Design.
Since then, James has collaborated on well over thirty film projects. The highlights include working with Steven Spielberg on a number of projects in various capacities related to visualization. On A.I. and Minority Report, and War of the Worlds, James not only designed specific production assets but also created imagery that was used to inform the look of the movies through the relationship between light and emotion and final design. James was also the Production Designer on an animated feature in 2008, Tusker, a magical film about a tribe of Indian Elephants. In 2011, James was selected by Steven Spielberg to put together an art team for the development of a television series. James has also worked with James Cameron on Avatar and Battle Angel, JJ Abrams on both Star Trek films, Robert Zemeckis, as well as projects with Michael Bay, Darren Aronofsky, and Terry Gilliam, to name a few.
In 2013, James joined ILM/Lucasfilm and quickly began work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the following years, he continued work on the Last Jedi and A Star Wars Story: Solo, in which he acted as the Lucasfilm Design Supervisor. James continued his work as the Lucasfilm Design Supervisor on The Rise of Skywalker. James also worked with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on several projects while at ILM, including Project Hail Mary. As well as film, James has worked with several Architectural firms and AAA Game studios to further develop visionary storytelling and visual development.
In 2020, James was asked to Production Design Gareth Edward’s film The Creator. This sci-fi epic took a different approach to filmmaking. Attempting to still provide big visual storytelling and world building, the production pushed themselves to work in smaller teams and more efficiently to keep costs down. Using the beautiful landscapes of Thailand as the backdrop, set construction was kept to a minimum whilst saving more of the big visual asset creation to post production. Thus allowing for more creative control. In early 2024 James joined the Jurassic Park franchise and Production Designed Jurassic World Rebirth. The production was based in the UK, and traveled to Thailand and Malta for location shooting and set builds. James is acting as production designer once again, now working with Disney/Lucasfilm on an upcoming Star Wars feature film in the UK.
