- In 1960, he formed the Cleveland Singers, featuring organist and accompanist Billy Preston.
- In 1968, he formed the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Today GMWA has nearly 30,000 members in 150 chapters across America.
- He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6742 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on August 12, 1981.
- After being called into ministry, he later founded the Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California.
- He was known as King James and the Crown Prince of Gospel.
- Attended and graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago and Schaumburg, Illinois.
- Following his sudden death, he was interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.
