- Her father, Karl, is a vascular surgeon. Her mother, Jane (yes, same first name shown for mother & daughter), is a retired teacher. She has a younger sister, Hannah, who is studying law at Brigham Young University and a younger brother, David, who died in 1985 from a brain tumor at the age of 11.
- Graduated from Brigham Young University in 1990 with a degree in journalism. A noted violinist, she attended the university on a music scholarship. In 2002, her alma mater honored her as one of its most distinguished alumni at a gala homecoming weekend.
