Biography

Samuel Claxton is particularly remembered for his character Mantilla in "His Own War", as well as for his notable performances in significant theatrical works such as Santa Camila de La Habana Vieja and María Antonia.

Despite his legacy, his last years were marked by hardship: surgery for bladder carcinoma, a percutaneous nephrostomy, and severe physical limitations that forced him to leave his home in Alamar as he was unable to climb stairs.

Claxton had a career spanning more than 60 films, and was yet another example of the precariousness faced by many in old age, a situation that even well-known figures who have made contributions are not immune, victims of a system that celebrates them in their moment of glory but neglects them when they need it most. It was through social media that he was able to obtain the catheters and other supplies he needed in his final days.

His participation in the San Sebastián Film Festival, the Glauber Rocha Festival in Brazil, and the First Pan-African Festival in the United States have also established him as one of the most renowned Cuban actors.

In April and May of 2025, the Cubaactores platform and Libia Batista Mora made urgent calls on social media to obtain disposable diapers, urinary catheters, urine collection bags, and a wheelchair, which was finally donated thanks to community solidarity.
