His real name was James Clark and he was born in Kilbirnie where his father was a blacksmith. He was married, had a son and lived at Thrums, Kilbirnie. The first play he was in was an amateur production of The Old Lady Shows Her Medals. His first professional appearance was at The Pavilion in Glasgow and his first film was The Ship Builders. Other films include The Bridal Path, Geordie, Whisky Galore and Rockets Galore.His television work included Miss Adventure, with Hattie Jacques.
