Biography

After studying at Eton, Jeremy Child worked briefly in the City of London. He left at his earliest opportunity, which was a disappointment to his father, who had worked in the Foreign Office and had hoped that his son would join the Guards. To please his father, Jeremy had an interview for the Guards, but when he was asked why he wanted to join, he said 'I don't' and was told 'Well that's the end of your military career'. He then went to drama school, where he learned to fend for himself and to lose his somewhat posh accent. When his father died in the mid '70s, Jeremy inherited his baronetcy, becoming Sir Jeremy, a title that he never used. He had a daughter Melissa from his first marriage and a daughter, Leonora, as well as a son, Alexander, from his second.

Jeremy is tall, slim, fair haired and often played a cultured snobby type of character in comedy films but he is actually Sir Jeremy Child, third baronet and son of the late Sir Coles John Child whose family motto is Imitare Quam Invidere - to imitate rather than to envy which is ideal for an actor.but back in 1977 he came upon something he just couldn't do.when he was cast as a servant in the play Don Juan and for the first time in his career he had to say'Sorry I can't do it'and resigned rather than harm the production. Jeremy was born during a wartime black -out in Woking, Surrey and later when the time came his father sent him to boarding school at Eton thinking that when the time came he'd be set for a job in the City but Jeremy had other ideas as ever since he'd seen Peter Pan when he was 6 he wanted to act. On leaving school he gave in to his father's plans but apart from his heart not being in it he kept making mistakes on the adding machines not helped by having failed O level maths 5 times. On top of which he hated conformity, travelling on crowded tubes, wearing a suit and having to queue at crowded cafes.He left and thanks to his mother he was allowed to join the Bristol Old Vic School.He remembers that eventually his doubting father became his biggest fan on seeing him on television or his name outside theatres.Any spare time he has he flys his light plane from an Oxford airfield and is trying to raise money to finance a film The Long Walk about 5 people who walked 6,000 miles across deserts and mountains to escape a Siberean labor camp. He also wants to make films for children . He was married to actress Deborah Grant by whom he has a daughter Melissa..
