  • The son of filmmaker Chen Huaikai, he was a Red Guard and a soldier before enrolling in film school, and at one point actually denounced his own father, an act for which he still feels great shame. The father, sentenced to hard labor for several years, worked with his son as artistic director on his film Farewell My Concubine.
  • Son: Arthur Chen.
  • His film Yellow Earth (1984) won awards in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Nantes (France) and Locarno (Italy) in 1985.
  • His film The Big Parade (1986) won awards in Montreal and Turin in 1987.
