Eileen Chang(1920-1995)

Her roots were from Shanghai, China. She spent a few years of her childhood in Tianjin. Her family then moved back to Shanghai and she considered herself a genuine Shanghainese.

I don't like grandeur. I prefer tragic grandeur, and even more so, desolation. Grandeur is only powerful, without beauty, and seems to lack humanity. Tragedy, like a bright red and purple color scheme, is simply a stark contrast. But it's more stimulating than inspiring. Desolation has a deeper aftertaste because it's like scallion green against pink, a contrasting contrast.
