Biography

Jef Ceulemans was born on July 23, 1929 in Lier, Flanders, Belgium. He is an actor and director, known for Het veenmysterie (1982), Magister Maesius (1974) and Bart Banninks (1972).

Jef Ceulemans is a Belgian actor and director.

Ceulemans' career as an actor started in 1955 and ended in 1966. He played with the traveling company Het Vlaams Schouwtoneel. From 1955 to 1960, this company created a stage "for the man on the street", following Jean Vilar. It gave performances of mainly classics in the afternoon for schools and in the evening for the general public. Founder Etienne Debel recruited professionally trained Flemish actors who were under contract for a longer period of time. Other members included Raf Reymen, Marcel Peeters, Mimi Peetermans, Jan Peré, Jeanne Geldof and Ivo Pauwels.

He directed recordings of jazz music for the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Organization (then BRT).

As a writer, Ceulemans achieved several successes. In 1963 he received a second prize for Lament voor 31 augustus (Jim) at an anniversary competition of the Royal Theater Society De Broedermin, and in 1964 Ceulemans received the ANV-Visser Neerlandia Prize for his television play De Vrouw en ik.

Ceulemmans also directed mainly Flemish youth series, including Het Veenmysterie (1982), Bart Banninks (1972) and Rogier van Ter Doest (1976).
