- Late husband, Baron Thyssen, had one of the world's largest private collection of art. His collection features some 1,500 paintings, sculptures and other works of art. The Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid was inaugurated in 1992. Carmen persuaded her husband to sell his family collection to the Spanish state for a nominal price.
