- Started 497 NASCAR Grand National Series (now Winston Cup) races without a win. This currently (2002) ranks third on the all-time list of winless drivers.
- Was one of the drivers of the famed Dodge Daytona "winged warriors" in the late 1960s.
- He and wife Jean filed suit against Exxon in 1995 claiming that a petroleum leak contaminated the ground water under their Paw Creek, NC business. A jury awarded $500,000 damage to the couple, but the judge declared that the evidence did not support the jury's reward. The Castles appealed and the settlement was reinstated in early 2000.
