  • Born of a Catalan father and Puerto Rican mother in the small town of Vendrell, Spain, Casals began his career performing music with his father Charles in church. One of 9 children, Casals became an international sensation due to his musical style, however with the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's eventual victory and rise in Spain, Casals self-exiled himself to Puerto Rico, where he died in 1973.

  • Composer, conductor, cellist and teacher, educated at the Barcelona School of Music with Tomas Breton and Jesus de Monasterio. He also studied music with his father, and with Jose Garcia and Jose Rodoreda. He taught at the Paris Conservatory in 1897, and led a string quartet there. He was a cellist in Madrid, then the Paris Opera. He gave concerts throughout Europe and in London in 1898. In 1901-1904 and again in 1914-1917 he gave concerts throughout the USA, and performed He conducted the Orquestra Pau Casals in Barcelona in 1919, and in South America through 1903. He was a member of the Cortot-Thibaud-Casals Trio, and a director of the Prades Music Festival in France between 1950 and 1953 and also Perpignan. He settled in Puerto Rico, and became director of the San Juan Music Festival. His biographies include "Pablo Casals" by L. Littlehales, and "Conversations with Casals" by J. M. Corredor.
