Biography

Ben Carter was born on February 10, 1911 in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. He was an actor and composer, known for Maryland (1940), Crash Dive (1943) and The Harvey Girls (1946). He died on December 12, 1946 in New York City, New York, USA.

Became one of the first African-American performers to sign a seven-year contract with 20th Century-Fox studios.

As an agent and casting director, he claimed to have cast every black role in Gone with the Wind (1939) with the exception of the main cast members.

Worked as a straight man with Mantan Moreland in vaudeville routines.

In the 1930s, he opened a talent agency along Central Avenue, Los Angeles, to represent actors and film extras of African American descent.

Death caused by diphtheria.
