Various studios traced the Internet copies of these films to Caridi, a member of the Academy who was supposed to use them for Oscar screening purposes. Russell William Sprague, 51, was subsequently arrested at his home in Homewood, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, where agents discovered hundreds of Academy screeners, many of them Caridi's, for recent and current movies in a search of his residence. Caridi denied receiving any money for the screeners. Caridi claimed that he thought Sprague was a "film buff" and had no knowledge that Sprague had duplicated the tapes.
