Various studios traced the Internet copies of these films to Caridi, a member of the Academy who was supposed to use them for Oscar screening purposes. Caridi denied receiving any money for the screeners. Caridi claimed that he thought Sprague was a "film buff" and had no knowledge that Sprague had duplicated the tapes.
