Michael Canzoniero

Biography

Michael Canzoniero

Mini bio

  • Michael Canzoniero is a New York filmmaker and entrepreneur who has spent his career doing two things that increasingly became one: making movies and building the infrastructure to make them.

Raised in Shoreham, Long Island, Canzoniero attended the University of Notre Dame before graduating from NYU’s Graduate Film Program. His short film Hyper screened in the Centerpiece program of the New York Film Festival, opening for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love. His first feature, The Marconi Bros., co-written and co-directed with filmmaker Marco Ricci, premiered at SXSW. He went on to direct the documentary Shelter Island, co-write and co-direct Don Peyote with Dan Fogler, and write and direct Making the Day.

At the same time, Canzoniero began building MCM Creative in Manhattan.

What started as a filmmaker assembling the resources needed to make his own work evolved into a full creative ecosystem encompassing production, soundstages, editorial, color, sound, podcast and vodcast production, and emerging production technologies. Today MCM works across independent film, television, documentaries, branded entertainment and major media productions while remaining rooted in the culture of independent filmmaking from which it began.

For Canzoniero, the company and the filmmaking were never separate pursuits. MCM was built around a simple idea: filmmakers should have a place where an idea can move from a conversation to a camera to a finished film without leaving the building.

After more than two decades working in independent film and building MCM, Canzoniero is now developing a new slate of narrative features while continuing to expand the studio as a home for filmmakers and creators in New York.
