James Canty is known for Thelma (2017), Smokin' Aces (2006) and The Newsreel: Characterization of a Subversive Organization. He has been married to Larisa Justine Heilner since October 8, 2011.

He is a Brooklyn-based guitarist and bassist with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, a rock band.

Son of Joan M. Canty of Washington DC and the late Donald J. Canty; Son-in-law of Mary B. Heilner and John L. Heilner of Princeton, New Jersey; Brother of Dennis V. Canty.
