- Paul Calinescu was born on August 23, 1902 in Galati, Covurlui, Romania. He was a director and writer, known for Pe raspunderea mea (1956), Floarea reginei (1946) and Titanic Waltz (1965). He died on March 25, 2000 in Bucharest, Romania.
- Romanian film maker, a graduate of the University of Bucharest. He directed his country's first documentary România (1934). The ethnographic film The Country of Motzi (1939) ("The Land of the Motzi") won the Best Documentary Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1939.
