Biography

Sophie Byrne is an award-winning film and TV producer, best known for her work on the Academy Award®-winning animated short The Lost Thing.

Sophie worked as a Senior Producer at the Oscar winning London studio Passion Pictures for 10 years. There she produced many award-winning projects, including the initial pilot for the hugely successful concept band Gorillaz - created by Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl comic) and Damon Albarn (Blur) - and their seminal 'Clint Eastwood' music video.

Returning to Australia in 2002 and basing herself in Melbourne, Sophie focused on developing extraordinary Australian intellectual properties.

Sophie then optioned the acclaimed cult concept Scarygirl and has worked closely with artist Nathan Jurevicius to successfully expand the brand across all media, including producing the multi award-winning online gaming prototype, which received over 1.5 million unique players worldwide. A feature film adaption, Arkie, is slated for delivery mid 2019.

In 2010 Sophie produced the Academy Award®-winning short film, The Lost Thing, based on Shaun Tan's picture book. The critically acclaimed animation won numerous other awards, including an Annecy Cristal award, an AFI (now AACTA) award, and the Inside Film award for Best Animated Short Film.

In 2011 Sophie was awarded The Greg Tepper Award for outstanding achievement by Film Victoria.

Sophie has several feature film, TV and digital media projects in various stages of development and production, including an adaptation of Shaun Tan's internationally acclaimed graphic novel The Arrival into a feature film, and a high-end animated TV series based on Shaun Tan's Tales From Outer Suburbia in development, with Lally Katz (Wentworth, Spirited) attached to write.

Sophie is currently the Supervising Producer (AU Unit) on Oscar Nominated director Ari Folman's 2D animated feature Where is Anne Frank?
