Biography

With over 35 years of sound mixing under his belt, Burton was first nominated for an Oscar in 1978 for THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY". In 1983 he won the BAFTA (British Academy Film and Television Award) for WAR GAMES". He received an Oscar for Best Sound in 1989 for the film, BIRD". In 2005 he received The Cinema Audio Society Career Achievement Award. Burton has also received Academy Award nominations for WAR GAMES", ALTERED STATES", THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION", THE GREEN MILE" and DREAMGIRLS". He won an Academy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for his work on DREAMGIRLS in 2005.

As of 2023, Burton, sound mixer Russell Williams II, actors Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, and costume designer Ruth E. Carter are the only African-Americans that have won two Oscars.

In 2007, Burton received his seventh Oscar nomination for Dreamgirls (2006), which at the time tied composer/producer Quincy Jones for the most Academy Award nominations by an African-American. The record was broken by Denzel Washington, who received his 7th and 8th nominations in 2017 for Fences (2016) and received his 9th nomination for Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) the following year.
