Biography

Julie Herlocker

Mini bio

  • Julie Herlocker is a director, producer, and writer whose approach to filmmaking has been shaped by years of working alongside some of television's most accomplished showrunners. Across television and film, she is drawn to stories with complex characters, emotional stakes, and themes that spark conversation.

Before transitioning to directing, Herlocker was a highly sought-after post producer, working on Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series, guiding each episode through every stage of post- production and ensuring each show's creative vision carried through to final delivery. She worked with executive producers including Mark Gordon, Steven Spielberg, Aaron Sorkin, Jim Kouf & David Greenwalt, experiences that gave her an understanding of story construction, performance, pacing, and the collaborative process that continues to shape her work as a director.

Raised in the Midwest with a love of film instilled by her father, Julie moved to Los Angeles, where she immersed herself in the mechanics of production, gaining an understanding of bringing stories from script to screen. Her first short film, a dramatic comedy starring Dee Wallace, led to her first episodic directing assignment on NBC's Grimm. She has since directed three short films, and her feature directing debut, The Sintern, a Tubi Original, is now streaming. She is attached to direct Unbridled Courage, a female-led period Western feature in active development.

Julie Herlocker is a graduate of the DGA's DDI Mentorship Program, a participant in the Paramount Global Directing Initiative, and was selected for the inaugural 2024 Alliance of Women Directors Rising Director Fellowship for feature film directors. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
