In December 1930, he opened, with his partner Walter Gibbons, the Leicester Square Theatre. This venue was bombed out during the war and Buchanan lost a sizeable amount of money as a result. However, he went on to manage the Garrick Theatre in 1946.

Jack Buchanan is portrayed by Garrett Lewis in the film Star! (1968), which features Julie Andrews as Gertrude Lawrence. Buchanan starred with Lawrence in the Broadway production of André Charlot's "Revue of 1924". Beatrice Lillie was also in the cast for Charlot's Revue.
