- Laurent de Brunhoff was born on August 30, 1925 in Paris, France. He was a writer and actor, known for Les aventures de Babar (1968), Babar: The Movie (1989) and Babar (1989). He was married to Phyllis Rose and Marie-Claude Bloch. He died on March 22, 2024 in Key West, Florida, USA.

- It was his mother, Cècile, who invented the story about an orphaned elephant to amuse Laurent and his brother Thierry, who repeated it to their father. Jean de Brunhoff named the elephant Babar, developed the plot and wrote a book for them: "L'Histoire de Babar, le petit Elephant" (The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant).
- Taking over for his father, who died of tuberculosis in 1937, Laurent wrote and illustrated "Babar et ce Coquin d'Arthur" (Babar and that Rascal Arthur) in 1946 and has been doing Babar books ever since. Many never realized there was any change in the author and illustrator of Babar, assuming the ten year gap between books was due to World War II.
