Born in Sunderland, he worked his way up from copy boy to journalist on the local paper. After doing his national service, he returned to Newcastle, before moving to London to work for a news agency, then spent 3 years in Cairo. Returning to London, his wife, knowing his real love was the theatre, told him to try it. Despite having no experience, he got a job at his first audition and straight away joined Equity. With two babies and no regular wage, things were tough, but as a precaution he kept up his union subscriptions and did some holiday relief work at the news agency. Then came a regular part in The Newcomers, which he had for some time, but left because for him the part had lost its challenge. He then got a role in Coronation Street, thanks to Patricia Phoenix (Elsie Tanner} who suggested him for a strong love interest story line.

Was due to play Fenner in the Doctor Who (1963) episode "Power Of Kroll", but became ill and was replaced by Philip Madoc.

Whilst being best known as a stage and television actor, particularly for his role in Coronation Street he has made at least a couple of films, Guns at Batasi and Fury at Smugglers Bay.
He'd been rushed to hospital after being found unconscious suffering from a liver failure. He was taking tablets for his liver complaint but was washing them down with large vodkas.
He married Patricia Phoenix in 1972 after they had been screen lovers in Coronation Street for 3 years.He was written out in 1976 and they parted in 1977 due to his heavy drinking.
