Biography

June Brown served in the Wrens and was classically trained at the Old Vic Drama School. She enjoyed a long career in the theatre, television and the cinema. The actor Nigel Hawthorne described her as "one of the most beautiful creatures I've seen on stage" after seeing her performance as Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler." Aside from her EastEnders (1985) fame as Dot Cotton, she appeared as "Lady Macbeth" opposite Albert Finney and directed "Double D" at the 1993 Edinburgh Festival.

After her mother lost an eight year old daughter and two week old son, June became the eldest of three girls. Her mother was a Mile End Road Cockney milliner whose husband had spent many years in the Far East as a produce buyer, so the family was comfortably off, even had a maid. However, they became slowly poorer after her father's unwise investments. When she was seventeen, June wanted to be an osteopath, but her father refused to support her financially, claiming that her qualifications would be wasted. Consequently, she spent a year in Scotland in the Wrens based at Loch Long. After her service was over, she joined the Old Vic Theatre School, and, over a period of years, became a well-known and respected repertory actress. Her first husband gassed himself, resulting in her losing a child. Her second marriage was to National Theatre director Robert Arnold. whom she met when both were at the RSC at Stratford. She had four daughters, Louise, Sophie, Chloe, Naomi and a son, William.
